Getting a section from drawing to production
Section data, profile development, hole-pattern work and sample runs. The part of the job that happens before the first tonne rolls, so what comes off the line is what you drew.
What we help with
Support that sits between your design and our rolls
Most problems with a roll-formed section are decided long before production: a corner radius that cannot be formed, a hole too close to a bend, a coating chosen without knowing where the plant is going.
We are a manufacturer, not a design consultancy, and we are clear about that line. Your structural engineer owns the loads, the spans and the certification under IS 875. What we own is whether the section you specified can be rolled at that thickness, held to IS 811 and EN 10162 batch after batch, and punched where you need it without distorting the web.
That is the conversation worth having early. It is far cheaper to move a hole 15 mm on a drawing than to discover on site that the bolt fouls a lip.
- Section data. Physical properties and engineering data for any profile, coating and thickness combination we roll.
- Profile development. New sections worked up from your sketch or sample, including roll tooling where the volume justifies it.
- Hole and slot patterns. Set out against bend lines and lip returns so punching does not deform the section.
- Coated-steel family selection. Galvalume, hot-dip galvanised, zinc-aluminium-magnesium or galvanised, matched to the site environment and design life rather than to the lowest line item.
- Sample and first-article runs. A physical length in your hands before a production batch is committed.
- Cut-length optimisation. Member schedules nested to reduce offcut across a large order.
Corner radius, lip return and hole position all get settled before the line runs.
Where a standard fitting will not do, plate work is drawn to match the section.
Data on request
What we can put in front of your engineer
Ask for any of this against a specific profile, thickness and coating, and we will send it rather than a general catalogue page.
| Item | What you get |
|---|---|
| Section properties | Area, mass per metre, second moment of area, section modulus and radius of gyration about both axes for the specified profile and thickness, for use with IS 875 design loads. |
| Material certificate | Certified coil traced to grade and coating class against IS 15961, IS 2062, IS 18513 or IS 277, with the IS 4759 coating mass where hot-dip galvanized. |
| Dimensional report | Measured web, flange, lip, thickness, straightness and twist against the IS 811 and EN 10162 limits for the batch. |
| Punching layout | A marked-up drawing confirming hole and slot centres, edge distances and tolerance before production. |
| Sample length | A physical piece of the agreed profile for fit checks against your module, pile or cleat. |
| Packing and marking plan | How bundles will be grouped, labelled and loaded, agreed before dispatch. |
How it runs
Developing a new profile
- 1
Bring the idea
A sketch, a competitor sample, a DXF, or a description of the problem the section has to solve. All of them are a workable starting point.
- 2
Formability review
We check bend radii, lip returns, spring-back at the thickness you want and whether the punching layout leaves enough edge distance.
- 3
Drawing agreed
A dimensioned section drawing with tolerances stated against IS 811 and EN 10162, signed off by both sides before anything is cut.
- 4
Tooling and trial
Roll tooling is set or made where the volume justifies it, then a trial length is run and measured.
- 5
Sample in your hands
You fit the sample to the real assembly. Anything that needs to move, moves now, while it is still cheap.
- 6
Production and repeat
The profile is recorded so a repeat order six months later rolls to the same dimensions as the first.
Scope
Where our responsibility starts and stops
We are responsible for
The section rolling to the agreed drawing, holding IS 811 and EN 10162 tolerances, carrying the specified grade and coating from certified coil, and arriving cut, punched and marked as ordered.
Your engineer is responsible for
Loads to IS 875, spans, member sizing, connection design, wind and seismic assessment, and the structural certification the project needs.
We work together on
Whether the section your design calls for can actually be produced, and what to change if it cannot. Ask us early and the answer is usually cheap.
